Church History
In the early 1890’s with the initiation of prayer services on the Biggerstaff Farm about one mile from the old church site, Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church began. The founding members of the church were: Agnes Mason, Mary Moore, Sofa Floyd, Annie Hills, Lizzie Holland, Jannie McKinney, Mary Britt, Lucy Poag, Bob Floyd, Jerry Wilson, Salmon Poag, Frank Moore, Sam Lathem and James Moore.
Mt. Pisgah has undergone construction five times. The original church burned down in 1927, the second church in 1946 and the third in 1954. However, church members continued to hold service in the Jackson Knob School Building until reconstruction at the present location. In September 1993, under the leadership of Rev. Robert O. Setzer, services were held at the Old Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Belmont, North Carolina while awaiting completion of our new edifice in July 1994.
Mt. Pisgah has been under the pastoral care of Rev. Bright Johnson, Rev. A.R. Burke, Rev. J.R. Miller, Rev. J.L. Dudley, Rev. Will Currence, Rev. W.M. Neely, Rev. S.M. Lowery, Rev. W.C. Meeks, Rev. J.H. Lewis, Rev. C.M. Freeman, Rev. F.G. Lowery, Rev. J.W. Wallace, and Rev. Robert O. Setzer, our present pastor.
Rev. Setzer has faithfully served as pastor for twenty one years. He is married to the former Sandra Smith. They have two children: Joseph and Mariah. Under Pastor Setzer’s guidance our church has initiated the Christian Education Department, Youth and Junior Praise Dance Teams, Men’s Choir, Revised Church Constitution, Youth and Children’s Churches, Youth and Junior Usher Board, Wednesday Bible Study, Van Ministry, Lay Workers Ministry, Computer Lab, Scholarship Fund, Church Incorporation in 2004, Security Ministry, Health Ministry and the Golden Circle Ministry.
We, the members of Mt. Pisgah thank God for what He has done in the past, for what He is doing presently, and for what He will do in the future. May God bless each and every one of you.
